Video self tapes are essential. Learn how to record with confidence and precision, or have our team guide you step by step.

Your First Step: Video Self Tape

The standard every model and actor needs—from first introduction to professional castings.

What is a Video Self Tape?

A video self tape is a recorded audition or presentation that replaces showing up in person. Instead of attending a live casting, you film yourself following specific instructions (like introducing your name, height, location, and doing a short walk or reading lines, depending on the industry).

For models, a self tape often includes:

  • A clear introduction (name, height, location).

  • A full-body shot and walk.

  • Simple posing at different angles.

In short: it’s your chance to show presence and ability on video, giving casting teams what they need without you being in the room.

We like this because what makes the self tape stand out is the subtle strength in the walk and personality on display—proof that it’s presence, not production, that counts. Take note: start simple, focus on your stride, and let your confidence lead the way.

FOR
BEGINNERS

The Essentials of a Video Self Tape

When creating your self tape, think of it as your introduction to the industry. Casting teams don’t just want to see your face, they want to feel your presence.

  1. Follow clear steps — A strong self tape usually runs 8–10 steps minimum. Walk naturally, stop with confidence, and let your energy carry through.

  2. Match the style — Know the difference between a runway walk and a pageant walk. Some events expect clean fashion pacing, others want personality and flair. Always check the baseline style preferred by the event, show, or organizer.

  3. Hold your pose — Don’t rush. Sit in your confidence. Take a breath, pause, and let the camera capture you fully before you transition.

The goal isn’t to be perfect—it’s to show that you can listen, follow direction, and embody presence on camera.

FOR EXPERIENCED MODELS

For experienced models, it’s an indispensable calling card that keeps you memorable to agencies and clients.

I have no professional camera—can I still make one?

Yes. A professional camera is not required to start. Many beginners film strong self tapes using a smartphone, as long as it’s set up correctly. Focus on:

  • Good lighting — natural daylight or a bright front-facing lamp.

  • Stable framing — use a tripod or place your phone on a steady surface.

  • Clear sound — minimize background noise and record in a quiet space.

  • Full body visibility — make sure the camera captures you head to toe during the walk and poses.

What matters most isn’t the equipment—it’s how clearly you present yourself and the confidence you bring to the video.
